Discovery Points of the Wild Atlantic Way
Along the Wild Atlantic Way there are numerous Discovery Points, which are pointed out by signs with the WAW logo. On our website you can find information about the Discovery Points of the different stages of the Wild Atlantic Way.
Among the many Discovery Points there are only fifteen, which have been chosen as Signature Discovery Points. These places are especially unique and shape the image of Ireland’s remarkable west coast.
Signature Discovery Points – 15 wonders of the Wild Atlantic Way
Fifteen of the Wild Atlantic Way’s discovery points have been designated as “Signature Points”. Special points that characterise Ireland’s west coast due to their uniqueness. These “Signature Points” are:
Malin Head
Located in the far north of Inishowen Peninsula, Malin Head is the northernmost tip of the Irish mainland.
Fanad Head
On the northernmost point of Fanad Peninsula lies Fanad Head with its wonderful view on the rough coast of the Atlantic ocean.
Slieve League
The fascinating cliff scenery of Slieve League is one of the outstanding natural wonders of the Wild Atlantic Way. With a height up to 600 metres, these steeply sloping cliffs are one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe.
Mullaghmore Head
At Mullaghmore Head you find yourself in a picture-book scenery: high waves roll towards the tranquil coast. Looking inland, Classiebawn Castle dominates the scenery against the backdrop of Ben Bulben.
Downpatrick Head
Downpatrick Head was named after Irelands patron saint St. Patrick, who founded a church on the narrow land tongue.
Keem Bay
Keem Bay is sheltered between steep slopes in the west of Achill Island. Even from a distance, the horseshoe-shaped beach attracts all eyes.
Killary Harbour
Killary Harbour is Ireland’s only fjord and stretches 16 kilometres between the Atlantic ocean and the village of Leenane.
Derrigimlagh
South of Clifden, the Wild Atlantic Way leads past the unique moorlands of Derrigimlagh. A monument in the shape of an airplane’s nose reminds us of a milestone in the history of aviation.
Cliffs of Moher
The Cliffs of Moher is the most famous tourist attraction on the west coast of Ireland. The cliffs rise up to 214 metres out of the Atlantic.
Loop Head
At Loop Head stands a pretty lighthouse with surrounding buildings. From April to October, visitors can visit the tower and see an exhibition on the history of the complex.
Blasket Sound
The westernmost part of the Dingle Peninsula is undeniably one of the most beautiful areas of Ireland. At the Wild Atlantic Way discovery point “Blasket Sound” lies the wonderful sandy beach Carrignaparka Beach.
Bray Head – Skelligs View
Bray Head – located on Valentia Island, can be reached in a 25-minute walk from the car park at Foilhommerum Bay.
Dursey Island
Dursey Island is a paradise for hikers and bird lovers, as it is home to numerous rare species. The island can be reached by cable car – the only one in Ireland.
Mizen Head
Rugged cliffs rise out of the Atlantic waters at Mizen Head and the echo of the surf lays above the headland. At the western tip stands a rather unspectacular lighthouse, which can only be reached via a bridge.
Old Head of Kinsale
The Old Head of Kinsale is a narrow headland that stretches about 4.5 km into the Celtic Sea. It is flanked by steep cliffs and a magnificent lighthouse is located on its southern tip.
