Grianán of Aileach Grianán Ailigh
On the mountain Greenan once lay the mightiest stronghold of all the lands of Ulster: the residence of the kings of Aileach. The ringfort which thrones on the mountain (a reconstruction of the original from the 19th century) is actually only the small inner part of the once huge fortress. From the top of the walls the panorama over the green hills and Lough Swilly is amazing.
Grianán of Aileach lies halfway between Buncrana and Newtown Cunningham off the Wild Atlantic Way. To get there, leave the N13 southwards and after 3 kilometres you will reach the hills (there are plenty of signs).
