Minaun Heights Barr an Mhionnáin
During clear weather conditions, there is hardly a better viewpoint to be found than 466 metres high Minaun Heights, overlooking Achill Island being confronted with the powerful surges of the ocean, as well as Blacksod bay and Clare Island.
But even when the sky is covered with clouds, the experience might just be as spectacular, as the sun often still shines on Minaun Heights, and every now and then, Achill island can be marvelled at, through a whole in the dense clouds.
Follow the Wild Atlantic Way (in this section the Atlantic Drive) for 1,5 kilometres and just before entering the village of Cashmel, a narrow, steep road will lead you to the lookout and parking area at Minaun Heights. Careful driving is required, not only for the slope, the road might also be occupied by sheep, not paying much attention to approaching cars.
