Donegal Bay and Sligo
Mullaghmore Head is a prime example of the Wild Atlantic Way. To the west, the Atlantic Ocean shows its wild side, while Classiebawn Castle dominates the scenery inland. Somewhat hidden below the castle is a marvellous sandy beach.
The great Irish poet William Butler Yeats described the area around Sligo as "the land of heart's desire". Nowadays it is called "Yeats' Country" in his honour. Here, the restless ocean meets a rugged and jagged coastline set against the backdrop of the table mountain Ben Bulben and the Darty Mountains.
West of Sligo you enter an area full of myths and traces of times long gone. Here you will find dolmens, stone circles and burial chambers. The warrior queen Maeve is said to be buried on Knockarea Mountain. Even today, visitors place stones on the burial mound to ensure that the infamous queen will never leave her grave again.
The signature discovery point of this section is Mullaghmore Head, which has already been introduced.
